Crossing the Delaware

Christmas night, December 25, 1776

One 35-second moment from the American Revolution, built five different ways, so we can compare how each browser technology looks and feels. All five use the same narration, music and sound. The 3D and panorama versions work in a VR headset (open this page in the Meta Quest browser).

Real-time 3D

three.js

A lightweight 3D library, the same one our Spinning Earth and Engine apps use. A Durham boat with soldiers, oars that row, drifting ice and falling snow.

A free desktop game engine, exported to run in the browser. Same scene and models. It takes longest to start, because the whole engine downloads first.

One AI-painted photo sphere. Look all the way around you from inside the boat. The people look the most real of any version here, but nothing moves except the snow.

What really happened

A bad yearBy December 1776 the Continental Army had lost New York and retreated across New Jersey into Pennsylvania. Many soldiers' enlistments ended on December 31.
The crossingOn Christmas night, about 2,400 soldiers crossed the icy river at McConkey's Ferry in a storm of sleet and snow. It took until about 3 in the morning.
Durham boatsMost men crossed in Durham boats: long, flat cargo boats, 40 to 60 feet long, usually pushed with poles. Horses and cannons went on ferries.
The surpriseAfter a 9-mile march, they surprised the Hessian soldiers at Trenton on the morning of December 26 and won, giving the army new hope.
